Tarasenko Unlikely to Finish Year in North America

Mar 4

I’m told not to expect highly regarded prospect Vladimir Tarasenko to finish the season in North America. Tarasenko injured his shoulder playing in Russia shortly after the World Junior Championship and there’s little point in risking further injury in the American League where he is eligible to play in the AHL playoffs. Tarasenko is expected to come to St. Louis soon to be evaluated by Blues Doctors.  News of him officially signing with the Blues won’t be too far behind.

St. Louis has re-called D-man Ian Cole from Peoria who will replace Tyson Strachan who’s been assigned back to the AHL.

The Blues are down to one more available recall from the minors they can use from this point moving forward.

The combination of trades and injuries has impacted what the Peoria roster will look like if they do earn an AHL playoff birth.

Adam Cracknell, who is up with the NHL club on emergency recall replacing the injured Vladimir Sobotka, remains eligible for the AHL playoffs..

Players such as Ryan Reaves and Chris Porter were assigned to the NHL following the trades to both Brad Winchester and Brad Boyes.  Both Reaves and Porter will not be eligible to play in the AHL playoffs since they were not on the Peoria roster at the time of the deadline. Trades can not open up spots for players to be called up on emergency.

Phillip McRae was not eligible to go to Peoria since injured players can not be sent down. This may explain why there was some confusion as to whether or not McRae was hurt as the team would have preferred to get him some valuable playoff experience in the AHL. He’s since been declared out with a knee injury and is expected back in about two weeks.

Same goes with D-man Nikita Nikitin whose injury prevented him from being added to the Peoria roster before the deadline.

There is a chance the Blues sign prospects Jay Barriball and D-man Cade Fairchild to an ATO (amateur tryout) after their season at the University of Minnesota is finished. Fairchild is considered the better prospect of the two.

Former third round pick Jori Lehtera is not eligible to join the Rivermen for a playoff run since he’s already signed with the Blues. He would have had to be on the Peoria roster before December 15th.

Would they do it again??

The Blues don’t seem to be too concerned about the financial losses they’re facing from a promotion that didn’t go as planned. Before the season the Blues allowed 600 season ticket holders to pay half of their balance up front while the other half would only have to be paid if the Blues made the playoffs. They obviously were confident in the Blues chances heading into the season.

Sources tell me the team is just as confident moving into next year and they’re strongly considering running a similar promotion. Stay tuned for me info on this.

The Blues are excited for Monday night when they will honor Keith Tkachuk, Red Berenson, Joe Mullen, and Gary Unger. The team is expected to unveil a permanent structure to be placed inside the Scottrade Center to honor four of the greatest Blues in franchise history. All four players wore the #7.

Feel free to weigh in on the Blues loss in Washington. It was a pretty good game throughout as the Blues had plenty of chances. Washington capitalized on a bad neutral zone turnover by Roman Polak who left Barret Jackman all alone defending a two on one.

More to come,

And while it is true Roman Polak committed a costly turnover it's up to Jackman to take away the 2-on-1 pass even if that means Semin gets a quality chance on Conklin. Every goaltender in the world will tell you to leave him the shooter and take away the pass. Tired of Jackman apologists in this city. I will never question his character, heart, or desire to win. No doubt - Barret's a warrior. However, the facts are the guy is a dinosaur in the new NHL where you MUST be able to skate and pass. Jackman would have been a stud had he played in the late 70s. This was proven in his first season when he won the Calder BEFORE the rule changes which prevent hooking, holding, and destroying players who camp in front of the net. (Chopper also had something to do with that Calder as well).

Bottom line - while only 29, the game has passed Jackman by. He is dead weight unless used as a 5th or 6th defenseman. This organization continues to use Barret as 1/2 of their shutdown defensive pair and with the exception of a few nights, he fails miserably because he doesn't have the skills to keep up with the league's top forwards. I realize there is no one on the current roster to throw into this role at this time, so fine, play it out this season as is. But next season this team needs to go out and get a veteran defenseman capable of playing in today's game - within today's rules. Like it or not, the game has changed. Otherwise this team will continue to falter defensively in the future.

I've been saying it for a while. Not so much the skating as the inability to think the game and move the puck out on transition without giving it away or icing it. Otherwise he does get beat a lot to speedy skilled players unless the ref allows him to hold onto the guy like he did Taylor Hall. flag this comment
I couldn't agree more with the post above....

I agree...I almost threw something at my TV last night when Jax mis-played that 2 on 1. WTF was he even doing!? He looked like he was trying to get his stick in the shooting lane and not the passing lane. Just as you said, I know of like 1 goalie in my life that's ever told me to go ahead and engage the puck handler and allow me to worry about the trailer. It's asinine that Jax looked so unprepared for that play as it developed. I'm not placing the blame for the loss squarely on his shoulders, but man-alive it didn't help us one bit and came at a critical juncture in the hockey game.

Let's jettison Jax and possibly look for a Kevin Bieksa to take his spot in the lineup? I'm not sure what the Bieksa / Vancouver camps have in mind as he's set to be a FA, but I wouldn't mind trying to obtain his services.

Andy, as for the Blues plans for season ticket "bribes" next season...they're gonna have to do something b/c I can see a lot of people who've cautiously turned the corner and came back to test the waters might be ducking right back into apathy when it comes to the Blues. Our woes are directly related to the lack of dedicated financial backing. Rutherford was writing, in a response to a mailbag question, that apparently some interest to invest in the team has been made as of late, yet those parties want to call the shots meaning Checketts is left out in the cold. B/C of this, Checketts hasn't pursued those investors as viable options. As a fan, I demand more from the team...and if that means that Checketts has to suck up his pride and step aside,...so-be-it. If this little blurb is in fact true....then I have to honestly say that Checketts is being selfish and is holding the team hostage from ever having the opportunity to improve the quality on the ice just b/c he wants to remain in charge. IMO...give the dude his money back and he can take his traveling circus elsewhere.

This year's season ticket renewal is going to resemble the last few moments aboard the Titanic.

Dave Checketts, sorry, The Carnival Barker, has made one misstep after another since arriving in town. His time is about up.

What kind of permanent structure will honor all four #7's? I'm guessing a four-headed player with a huge butt.

Here's what I'm telling my ticket rep: I'll send you the money when I see what they do to ADD talent. I can't be the only one who will take that stand. It will be interesting to see how fast they get their renewals.

Could Jackman have played it better, sure, but 90% of the mistake and goal is on Polack who never should have been carrying the puck into a crowd int he neutral zone.

I wish I had the balls to say I'm not going to buy tickets, but by the time July rolls around, I'll be ready for hockey again, even if we completely suck.

I really hope Blues fans don't expect too much out of Tarasenko. A lot of Blues fans have hopes he'll be the missing piece we need on forward. I'd love for that too happen, but that's a little much for a 19 year old kid to walk into the NHL and pull off, even if he was a top 5 talent in the draft.
in reply to jammer21
Whoa,....100% agree here. I'm so tired of proclaiming this, that, and the other guy are going to be the savior of the Blues. I hope Tarasenko comes in here and plays exceptionally well, but we won't know until he produces something. I remember this organization really hyping up the great Peter Sejna as he was....*quietly mumbles off* flag this comment
I have high hopes for Tarasenko, but I think a reasonable expectation for him is between 10-15 goals and maybe 30-35 pts next year. If people are expecting more than that, they are likely to be let down. It is tough to come in and light it up when you have not even turned 20 yet.
in reply to carcus
Yeah, this is about what I expect out of him. The problem is, casual Blues fans are watching clips of this guy on youtube and getting waaaaay too excited. You just can't reason with a casual Blues fan who has watched a clip of someone on youtube doing something awesome. flag this comment
I'll bet he nets at least twenty goals and has about forty points or so depending on where he plays in the line up and if he's out there for any special teams. He's like a stronger version of Oshie. But hey it was a good draft year, I've heard many a scout say they had him top three but knew he'd go down b/c of the transfer issues.

I'm just hoping he's like a Semin with heart. flag this comment
Wanted to clarify my last statement, being not right away necessarily but should grow into it.

We need a real veteran either a sniper or at least a Pronger type on the back end for these young guys. A guy who is good, has an edge and still hungers to win. flag this comment
I'm not expecting too much next year, but he does have the potential to be the point per game player we need going forward.

Now that Brewer is gone and guys are playing more minutes in defensive situations, it's pretty obvious that Jackman needs to be replaced by someone who can fill the role that he is supposed to be filling. Somebody solid in the defensive zone, preferably with a big body and some physicality to his game. flag this comment
I agree BlueManGuru about what line The Russian Tank is on, but with this team he's probably going to be on ANY line on any given night. Why this team cant stay with set lines is beyond me. Vancouver has the best record in the NHL and they roll the same lines every night. they win & lose with them but at least they have chemistry. I'm not a coach or anything but it seems to me that teams that don't mix lines throughout the game appear to be more successful. flag this comment
So can Cole be sent down to play in Peoria before or after the Blus season?
in reply to Icevision
Yes he can flag this comment
Andy whats the story with Perron, saw him out today in Creve Coure so hes obviously not traveling with the team. Any news?

Out for the year flag this comment
I feel bad for the players and fans in Peoria. They're left with the short straw. All so the Blues could have some players play out the string in a meaningless season.
