Flames Ownership Won't Force Iginla Trade
Jarome Iginla may be the biggest name on the trade deadline rumor block. Whether he actually gets moved remains to be seen.
Sources say Calgary Ownership isn’t forcing the issue with Iginla. If he wants to go they’ll seek a trade but I’m told they aren’t desperately trying to move him.
Even with the Flames struggling they still sellout games consistently and having an icon like Iginla on the roster is a big reason why.
The question becomes does he want to leave? This is the answer Calgary needs to know.
At some point, and it might have already occurred, the Flames need to hear from Iginla to know what he wants to do. The worst case scenario for the Flames is that he stays beyond the deadline and then walks in July. The Flames can’t go down that road which means they might need to have a deal in place before the deadline.
At the very least they need to know where his mind is at.
Whoever is looking to get him will need to pay a premium. Just look back and see what the Blues got from Atlanta when they traded Keith Tkachuk a few years back. Knowing they would re-sign Tkachuk in the summer, the Blues still got a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd from the Thrashers. They would have received an additional 1st rounder if Tkachuk re-signed with Atlanta.
Jay Bouwmeester is another player teams are eyeing. Again, it will take a substantial package to pluck Bouwmeester out of Calgary. One league source says Calgary wants the moon for Bouwmeester.
St. Louis had serious talks with Calgary at the draft and you can be sure those conversations have carried over into the season. How much is St. Louis willing to part with to get Bouwmeester?
Sources say the Flames want youth who can step into the NHL immediately. Jaden Schwartz fits this description and I’m told he’s a player they have their eyes on.
Including Schwartz in a package for Bouwmeester doesn’t make a ton of sense. Schwartz could play in St. Louis for the next 12 years, Bouwmeester for a year and a half.
The Blues place a heavy value on their young players considering they aren’t a team who can go out and spend freely in free agency.
