Blues Suffer Another Injury

Dec 15

The Blues hung in as long as they could Wednesday night in Detroit as they fell to the Red Wings 5-2.

Undisciplined play erased any hopes of the Blues escaping Motown with at least a point.

The theme of the season for St. Louis has been injuries. That trend continued with D-man Erik Johnson going down with what the team is calling a lower body injury. Johnson got his left leg tangled up with Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk and went straight to the dressing room after leaving the ice. He was able to leave the ice on his own power.

Johnson appeared to immediately grab his right knee after hitting the ice.

The Blues have seen several of their top players miss significant time this season with serious injuries. The Blues came into this game without the services of David Perron (concussion),T.J. Oshie (broken ankle), Andy McDonald (concussion), Roman Polak (wrist surgery), and Alex Pietrangelo (upper body, all indications point towards a shoulder injury).

Johnson will be re-evaluated Thursday in St. Louis where the Blues host the Los Angeles Kings who have been in town since Tuesday.  Earlier in the week Pietrangelo was declared questionable for Thursday’s game against LA.

If Johnson and Pietrangelo are unavailable for Thursday the Blues will be forced to call up a D-man. Rookie Nikita Nikitin will receive strong consideration.

More to come,

I guess that's why they call them the Blues.

Dear Santa,
All I want for Christmas is a healthy Blues team.
P.S please don't wear your Blues jersey under your awesome red suit because you might slip down the chimney, break your leg, ankle, or wrist and then land on your head ending up with a concussion and we don't want you to miss any time delivering presents. Thanks Santa!

The bad news: All our impact players are going down with injury.

The good news: This means Brad Boyes is officially safe from any harm.
in reply to jammer21
Brad Boyes officially had the quietest, most invisible 14:59 of ice time in the history of the game. I maybe saw him out there for all of :05 seconds...the rest of the time he was out there is a mystery to me as I didn't see him. This guy is a joke!!! flag this comment
Hey can you blame the guy!? Look what happens to all the productive players on our team! flag this comment
I noticed Boyes. He was leisurely skating on the back check and helped create a Detroit 2-on-1 break. Otherwise, no, didn't see him out there much.

EJ's injury looked and sounded bad. Especially the part about the Blues training staff and the Red Wings doctors were called in to look him over.

in reply to bcallaway
Not trying to downplay the injury, because it does look like it is serious, but I don't think that the Blues or any team brings their team doctors to away games. I would think that anytime that a potential serious injury happens, that the other team's doctors would be brought in as a precaution to check things out so that the player doesn't make things worse by continuing to walk on a bad knee, etc. flag this comment
EJ's golf cart knee has returned. Glad we didn't move him while we had a chance.

Amazing how in a contract year Brewer has gone down with an injury yet but if you're one of the better players watch out. Hey Halak and Berglund better take some time off on their own. Steen, Backes watch out.

This is retarded and sick. And yet the front office does nothing, takes no chances just has all the beat writers say they have interest...blah blah freaking blah.

It's hard being a Blues fan, it's just damn hard.

@ Andy so the Blues won't take a chance on Cheechoo but they won't bench Boyes when he doesn't show up either? Honestly last night I would HAVE RATHER SEEN CAM FREAKING JANSSEN OUT THERE INSTEAD OF BOYES.
in reply to BlueManGuru
So, are you hoping that Brewer goes down? It makes you upset that he is playing well and is staying healthy?

What are we supposed to do right now? Why waste trading and giving up too much when almost all of our top talant is injured? (And yes, a trade would be uneven right now. No team is going to even give a fair trade with the Blues right now since they would be considered desperate.)

And you are really going to keep up this, I don't know what it is obsession maybe, with Cheechoo? He is done. There is a reason he is getting AHL tryout deals in 25 day periods.

If Boyes would only light the world on fire.........Give me a break. I would hope he played better, but too many fans want him to be something that he just isn't. He has always been this type of player. The only reason anyone noticed him in the past was because he scored some goals.

This Christmas season fans need to be visiting the players at the hospital, not the other way around as usual. I know it is hard for most fans, but this season is a lost cause with the injuries. If anything comes out of it, a miracle will have happened.

Just stop it. Or continue torturing yourself. You can choose. Because the Blues are not about to mortgage the future for a small bandaid to cover the arm or leg that has been cut off. flag this comment
The way he came down on his right knee it looked more like a hyper extension or a sprain as opposed to any significant ligament damage...if he tore an ACL we would have likely found out last night. The fact the Blues are saying they don't think he re-aggravated his previous injury is hopefully a good sign. Hate to see him go through that injury again. We should learn more this morning.
in reply to AndyStrickland
I really do hope that this is the case, but we have heard things like this earlier this year. Polak comes to mind. flag this comment
"Hopefully" they keep him away from the Cardinals medical staff. flag this comment
i've had two ACL tears, i was surprised by the way he went down that it was his bad knee that was injured. my first thought was he tore up a bunch of scar tissue. hurts like hell but clears up quick. wishful thinking..... flag this comment
...and yet the Blues medical staff was right on top of Polak's write, Perron's concussion, and McDonald's concussion. Figures, we're having the "wait and see" approach with EJ's injury.

This is definitely one of the toughest seasons to watch as a Blues fan. To know their potential and see it wasted by so many injury. I know that everyone wants a trade, but the Blues have been smart and patient. Look at the Penguins and the Hawks, they had miserable seasons before they were good again. I wouldn't mind to see somebody like a Langdenbruner come in. He is a solid hockey player and the Devils are as desperate as we are right now.
in reply to jwoodro
With this latest injury to the Defense. Would the discussions of Marc Andre Bergeron coming to the blues look like more of an option.
I'm thinking that if he joined the blues although a little bit of a defensive liability, it would still allow the blues to move a defenceman for some offence if they are still looking, which I think might be a good option, as long as these injuries to Oshie, Perron, and McDonald take longer to recover from and pending the results of EJ's knee.
in reply to jwesty16
I agree that Bergeron should be looked at more if Johnson is out for an extended period of time/season. Even if you are not going to make a trade, we really do have way too many defenseman with little to no experience. And he would help our PP. flag this comment
@Carcus

Dear carcus,

I'm not by any stretch of the imagination saying that Cheecho would come in here and light the world up...in fact I doubt it. But to not take the chance to call up more players of a fourth line caliber when we are sorely lacking offense is my problem. Most of the players I have mentioned are low cost, swing for the fences hope they have something to show but probably won't work but MIGHT OFF SET the struggles we are going through now.

I know it's hard for to imagine but the season despite your ironically pessemesitic standards is a far cry from the reality. For instance two teams ahead of the Blues have played far more games than the Blues and neither team has a sweet cushion that a point a game avaerage won't defeat. It really depends on if we're going to get healthy at all.

Sorry to dissappoint you Carcus but Brewer is not having a great season. He's still not that good but being as his value is increasing because there are schmucks like you we might get a decent return for him when there are teams desperate to fill in such holes on their defense. Him or Jackman are prime bait to land some scoring help. And since we also have numerous defensive prospects, prospects in general, and this draft is weak COMBINED WITH WHERE THIS CLUB WANTS TO BE THIS YEAR WHICH IS MINIMALLY TO MAKE THE PLAY OFFS, there is some scoring out there and not all of it old and worn out. Which means that we could stack our team.

Now on the other hand if we are now screwed as a team it wouldn't much matter if we got rid of players like Brewer of Jackman anyway by traqding from a strength and picking up some younger talent that has a chance to produce.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT BOTH PRUCHA AND ROLSTON HAVE BEEN ON WAIVERS. FLEISCHMAN WAS TRADED FOR NOTHING AS WELL AS SOME OTHER YOUNG STUDS FROM DEEP TEAMS. I REALLY HAD MY EYES ON ANDREW LADD IN THE OFF SEASON AS WELL AS BYUGUFLIN ANYONE OF WHOM WOULD HAVE BEEN WORTHWHILE FOR US.

But I also really like what we have coming our way from last years' draft at forward.

But riddle me this: your team has trouble scoring and you don't call up Hensick, Drazonvich or McRae all who are decent scorers in the AHL, two of who were not on scoring lines when called up and judged on their performance as fourth liners???

If you can answer me that riddle your estimation will go up in my eyes.
in reply to BlueManGuru
The Cheecho fascination needs to go away. He is not NHL material any more. He can't skate well enough to make it in the NHL, which is why he is now in the AHL on a tryout basis.

I know that the Blues are still close to just about all the West. It is still going to be a miracle if they can hang on with Perron, Oshie, McDonald, Johnson, Petro, Polak......out of the lineup. Our great start has us still in the hunt for a playoff spot, but if these guys can't get back in the lineup and be the players that they were/should be soon, we can't realistically expect the team we have now to hang around.

Brewer is having a very good year. The fact that you can't accept that just shows your deep, deep dislike for him, and that is sad. He has fought to come back from a potential career ending injury. He cares about this team. He is not the best player, but he gives everything he has. It will never be good enough for a lot of people like yourself because of the past, a lot of which has nothing to do with him. He is desperately needed right now, as is Jackman. Even though you would like having 6 Defenseman under the age of 25, the team does not want that because it would be a disaster.

The team has called up TJ and Draz. I don't blame them for not calling up McRae yet. Most of these guys just are not ready to be NHL'ers. Throwing them in there with most of your skill guys out is a recipe for disaster, just like throwing out there all young defensemen like you seem to want. flag this comment
